The Government Public Relations Department (PRD), one of the oldest and largest audiovisual producers in Thailand, is organizing an exhibition on Thai Audiovisual Heritage at the Bangkok Art and Culture Center, situated at the Siam – Pathum Wan intersection shopping area.

Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office Satit Wongnongtaey on 28 October 2009 presided over the opening of the exhibition on the occasion of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, which falls on October 27 each year.

World Day for Audiovisual Heritage is observed annually in order to help build global awareness of issues related to preserving audiovisual material, such as sound recordings and moving images. The General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in its 21st session on 27 October 1980, endorsed the Recommendation for the Safeguarding and Preservation of Moving Images. In 2005, UNESCO proclaimed October 27 World Day for Audiovisual Heritage to raise awareness of the importance of audiovisual documents as an integral part of national identity and to draw attention to the urgent need to protect and preserve them. As a member of UNESCO, Thailand, through PRD and the National Film Archive of Thailand as core agencies, has organized activities marking this occasion since 2006. This year’s theme is “Fading heritage – We can save it.”
The exhibition on Thai Audiovisual Heritage is open to the general public from 10.00 to 21.00 hr every day, except Monday, until 19 November 2009. It takes place at the Thai AV Heritage House, Room No. 9, on the third floor of the Bangkok Art and Culture Center.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, which operates this center, has allowed PRD to set up the Thai AV Heritage House there from 14 October to 19 November 2009. On display at the house are rare still and moving pictures and sound recordings, all of which are kept at the PRD Museum and Archive, located at the PRD Headquarters on Soi Aree Samphan, Phahonyothin Road, in Bangkok.

In particular, the recordings include those of prominent figures in Thai history, for instance, the voice of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej addressing the Thai people before his visit to Vietnam in 1959 to strengthen friendly international relations. Another interesting recording is the voice of former Prime Minister Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat (9 February 1959 – 8 December 1963), as he read national slogans on various occasions in those days. Among other recordings is a voice report on the traditional football tournament between Chulalongkorn University and Thammasat University, two famous institutions of higher education in Thailand.

Both Thai and international visitors are welcomed at the Thai AV Heritage House. Anyone wishing to donate old audiovisual objects, such as U–matic tapes, video tapes, cassettes, films, long-playing records, and radio and television sets, may contact Miss Kannika Chivapakdee at the PRD Museum and Archive, tel. 02-618-2323 ext. 2212 or 2214.
